SARS Coronavirus is an enveloped virus containing 3 outer structural proteins, namely the membrane (M), envelope (E), and spike (S) proteins. Spike (S)-glycoprotein of the virus interacts with a cellular receptor and mediates membrane fusion to allow viral entry into susceptible target cells. Accordingly, S-protein takes part in virus infection cycle and is the primary target of neutralizing antibodies.

The FGFs are a family of more than 20 small (~17–26 kDa) secreted peptides. The initial characterization of these proteins focused on their ability to stimulate fibroblast proliferation. 40S ribosomal protein S5 (RPS5) is a ribosomal protein, which is a member of the ribosomal protein S7P family.Ribosomes, which are the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small subunit and a large subunit that comprise of over 80 distinct ribosomal proteins. RPS5 is a 204 amino acid component of the 40S complex. RPS5 proteins exist as multiple processed pseudogenes which are scattered throughout the genome. RPS5 is expressed at varying amounts in colorectal cancer cells, proposing a possible role in carconigenesis.

DBR1 is an RNA lariat debranching enzyme which hydrolyzes 2'-5' prime branched phosphodiester bonds. The encoded protein specifically targets the bonds at the branch point of eliminated lariat intron RNA, transforming them to linear molecules which are then degraded. Additionally, DBR1 takes part in retroviral replication.

PDGF-BB is a member of the platelet-derived growth factor family. The four members of this family are mitogenic factors for cells of mesenchymal origin and are characterized by a motif of eight cysteines. This gene product can exist either as a homodimer (PDGF-BB) or as a heterodimer with the platelet-derived growth factor alpha polypeptide (PDGF-AB), where the dimers are connected by disulfide bonds.
