This occurs during a myocardial infarct (MI or heart attack) when CK-MB Type II is released from damaged heart muscle, and the C-terminal lysine is cleaved in the blood stream, thus creating CK-MB Type I. This difference can be exploited in diagnosis of an MI.

UCK1 is a uridine-cytidine kinase which catalyzes the phosphorylation of uridine and cytidine to uridine monophosphate and cytidine monophosphate. NUDT14 is a cytoplasmic protein which contains one nudix hydrolase domain and acts as the sugar donor in numerous glycosylation reactions, including those involved in the production of glycogen. NUDT14 hydrolyzes ADP-ribose into ribose 5-phosphate and AMP, and UDP-glucose to glucose 1-phosphate and UMP. NUDT14 is a homodimer which binds magnesium as a cofactor and is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 14.

The gamma globin genes which are HBG1 and HBG2, usually expressed in the fetal liver, spleen and bone marrow. 2 gamma chains together along with 2 alpha chains comprise fetal hemoglobin (HbF) which is normally replaced by mature hemoglobin (HbA) at birth. Gamma chain production continues into adulthood in several beta-thalassemias and linked situations. The two types of gamma chains differ at residue 136 where glycine is found in the G-gamma product (HBG2) and alanine is found in the A-gamma product (HBG1). The former is predominant at birth.
