HINT1, also known as Histidine triad nucleotide-binding protein 1 is part of the superfamily named for a near C-terminal HXHXHXX motif (H:Histidine, X:a hydrophobic amino acid) positioned at the ?-phosphate of nucleotide substrates. HINT1 hydrolyzes adenosine 5'-monophosphoramidate substrates such as AMP-morpholidate, AMP-N-alanine methyl ester, AMP-alpha-acetyl lysine methyl ester and AMP-NH2. Though it was initially considered to be a protein kinase C inhibitor and act as a haplod-insufficient tumor suppressor including spontaneous tumor formation in Hint+/- and Hint-/- , its actual physiologic function is not known.

ARL11 (ADP-ribosylation factor-like protein 11) belongs to the ARF family of the Ras superfamily of small GTPases which are known to be involved in multiple regulatory pathways altered in human carcinogenesis. ARFs are highly conserved guanine nucleotide binding proteins which enhance the ADP-ribosyltransferase activity of choleratoxin. ARFs are important in eukaryotic vesicular trafficking pathways and they have a vital role in the activation of phospholipase D (PC-PLD). ARL11 is assumed to act as a tumor suppressor which may have a role in the regulation of apoptosis.

SPRY Domain-Containing SOCS Cox Protein 2 (SPSB2) belongs to a suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) family, and is a member of the subfamily of proteins containing a central SPRY (repeats in splA and RyR) domain and a C-terminal SOCS box. SPSB2 is present in a gene-rich cluster on chromosome 12p13 in the vicinity of the CD4 antigen and triosephosphate isomerase genes. SPSB2 is apparent substrate recognition component of a SCF-like ECS (Elongin BC-CUL2/5-SOCS-box protein) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex that mediates the ubiquitination and ensuing proteasomal degradation of target proteins.

The cytokine Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has been identified to be secreted by the pituitary gland and the monocyte/macrophage and to play an important role in endotoxic shock. MIF has the unique property of being released from macrophages and T cells in response to physiological concentrations of glucocorticoids. The secretion of MIF is tightly regulated and decreases at high, anti-inflammatory steroid concentration.

Protein A binds to human IgG1, IgG2 and IgG4, mouse IgG2a, IgG2b and IgG3 and rat IgG2c. Protein A also binds to total IgG from rabbit, pig, dog, cat, and guinea pig.

RNA binding motif protein 17 (RBM17) is a splice factor which binds to the single stranded 3'AG at the exon/intron border and promotes its utilization in the 2nd catalytic step. The RBM17 protein is involved in the regulation of alternative splicing and the utilization of cryptic splice sites. RBM17 protein also stimulates the utilization of a cryptic splice site created by the beta-110 mutation in the HBB gene. The ensuing frameshift leads to sickle cell anemia.

Transcription elongation factor A protein-like 1 (TCEAL1) is a member of the transcription elongation factor A (SII)-like (TCEAL) family, which may function as nuclear phosphoproteins that modulate transcription in a promoter context-dependent manner. TCEAL1 is involved in transcriptional regulation. TCEAL1 is expressed in all tissues, especially highly expressed in the heart, ovary, prostate and skeletal muscle.

DEAD Box Protein 56 (DDX56) belongs to the DEAD box protein family. DEAD box proteins, categorized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases. DEAD box proteins are implicated in several cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Based upon their distribution patterns, certain members of this family are assumed to be involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. Syndecan-4 is a type I integral membrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG), which was originally isolated from cloned rat microvascular endothelial cells as an antithrombin-binding molecule, and is now known to be a member of the syndecan family. Syndecan-4 binds to basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), midkine, and tissue factor pathway inhibitor via its heparan sulfate chains, and is thought to be involved in various biologic functions such as signaling of bFGF, anticoagulation, and focal adhesion formation. A previous study demonstrated that syndecan-4 is expressed in various tissues, and its level of expression in the kidney is stronger than those of other syndecan family members. Thus, syndecan-4 is thought to play certain roles in maintaining renal function. Moreover, it has been reported that proteoglycans, especially sulfated proteoglycans, are involved in organogenesis of the kidney.

Ferritin is the main intracellular iron storage protein in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Ferritin’s major functions are the storage of iron in a soluble and nontoxic state and its release in a controlled fashion. An iron-containing protein complex is found mostly in the intestinal mucosa, spleen, and liver. Ferritin is composed of 24 subunits of the heavy and light chains. Variation in ferritin subunit composition may influence the rates of iron uptake and release in different tissues. Defects in the light chain ferritin gene are linked to a number of neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome. The genes that encode the light and heavy chains are on located different chromosomes. The light chain genes are in chromosome region 19q13.3-q13.4 whilst those for the heavy chain are in chromosome region 11q12-q13. Ferritin is shaped like a hollow sphere, inside which the iron is stored in the Fe(III) oxidation state. The iron is integrated in the mineral ferrihydrite, [FeO(OH)]8[FeO(H2PO4)], which is attached to the inner wall of the sphere. To release iron once the body needs it, the iron must be altered from the Fe(III) to the Fe(II) oxidation state. Subsequently, the iron leaves through channels in the spherical structure. Therefore, the structure of ferritin is tremendously important for the protein's ability to store and release iron in a controlled mode.

The body has a "buffer" against iron deficiency (if the blood has too little iron, ferritin can release more) and, to a lesser extent, iron overload (if the blood and tissues of the body have too much iron, ferritin can help store the excess iron).

Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 3 (CXCL3) is a small cytokine belonging to the CXC chemokine family that is also known as GRO3 oncogene (GRO3), GRO protein gamma (GROg) and macrophage inflammatory protein-2-beta (MIP2b). CXCL3 controls migration and adhesion of monocytes and mediates it effects on its target cell by interacting with a cell surface chemokine receptor called CXCR2. The gene for CXCL3 is located on chromosome 4 in a cluster of other CXC chemokines.
