Prostatic acid phosphatase, also known as PAP, is an enzyme produced by the prostate. PAP may be found in increased amounts in men with prostate cancer.
PAP’s physiological function may be associated with the liquefaction process of semen.
The highest levels of PAP are found in metastasized prostate cancer. Diseases of the bone, such as Paget's disease or hyperparathyroidism, diseases of blood cells (sickle-cell disease) or multiple myeloma or lysosomal storage diseases (Gaucher's disease), will show moderately higher levels.
Certain medications can cause temporary changes in PAP levels. Manipulation of the prostate gland through rectal exam, biopsy or massage may increase the level.

Plasmodium falciparum is a protozoan parasite, one of the species of Plasmodium that cause malaria. Malaria parasites are members of the Apicomplexa. Apicomplexa are characterized by a set of organelles found in some stages of the parasite's life cycle. These organelles, collectively known as apical organelles because of their localization at one end of the parasite, are involved in interactions between the parasite and host. In particular, the apical organelles have been implicated in the process of host cell invasion. In the case of Plasmodium, three distinct invasive forms have been identified: sporozoite, merozoite, and ookinete.

The bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a family of secreted signaling molecules that can induce ectopic bone growth. Many BMPs are part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily. BMPs were originally identified by an ability of demineralized bone extract to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo in an extraskeletal site. Based on its expression early in embryogenesis, the BMP encoded by this gene has a proposed role in early development. In addition, the fact that this BMP is closely related to BMP5 and BMP7 has lead to speculation of possible bone inductive activity.

Progesterone-Associated Endometrial Protein (PAEP) is a member of the kernel lipocalin super family whose members share rather low sequence similarity but have highly conserved exon/intron structure and three-dimensional protein folding. Most lipocalins are clustered on the long arm of chromosome 9. PAEP protein has been previously referred to as pregnancy-associated endometrial alpha-2-globulin, placental protein 14, and glycodelin.

Phospholysine phosphohistidine inorganic pyrophosphate phosphatase (LHPP) belongs to the HAD-like hydrolase superfamily. LHPP is an exceptional enzyme which hydrolyzes not only oxygen-phosphorus bonds in inorganic pyrophosphate but also nitrogen-phosphorus bonds in phospholysine, phosphohistidine and imidodiphosphate in vitro. LHPP is expressed in the liver, kidney and moderately in the brain.

Borrelia belongs to a genus of bacteria of the spirochete phylum. Borrelia causes borreliosis, which is a zoonotic, vector-borne disease transmitted mainly by ticks and some by lice, depending on the species. Of the 36 known species of Borrelia, 12 are distinguished to cause Lyme disease or borreliosis and are transmitted by ticks. The main Borrelia species causing Lyme disease are Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia afzelii, and Borrelia garinii. The Borrelia genus members have a linear chromosome which is about 900 kbp in length as well as an excess of both linear and circular plasmids in the 5-220 kbp size range. The plasmids are atypical, as compared to most bacterial plasmids, since they contain many paralogous sequences, a large number of pseudogenes and, in some cases, essential genes. Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) is a small cytokine belongs to the CC chemokine family which is also known as monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1). MCP 1 is found at the site of tooth eruption and bone degradation. In the bone, CCL2 is expressed by mature osteoclasts. CCL2 recruits immune cells, such as monocytes, to sites of tissue injury and infection. MCP 1is produced as a protein precursor containing signal peptide of 23 amino acids and a mature peptide of 76 amino acids. As with many other CC chemokines, CCL2 is located on chromosome 17 in humans. The cell surface receptors that bind CCL2 are CCR2 and CCR5.

Phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGP) is discovered in all tissues including red cells, lymphocytes and cultured fibroblasts (at protein level). PGP is most active in skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle. The catalytic activity of PGP is 2-phosphoglycolate + H2O = glycolate + phosphate. Diseases associated with PGP include tardive dyskinesia and polycystic kidney disease.
