Defensins form a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides made by neutrophils. Members of the defensin family are highly similar in protein sequence. This gene encodes defensin, beta 103A, which has broad spectrum antimicrobial activity and may play an important role in innate epithelial defense.

In vitro, CMV replicates in human fibroblasts.

Secreted Frizzled-Related Protein 5, also known as SFRP5, belongs to the SFRP family which includes a cysteine-rich domain homologous to the putative Wnt-binding site of Frizzled proteins. SFRPs perform like soluble modulators of Wnt signaling. SFRP5 & SFRP1 are implicated in determining the polarity of photoreceptor cells in the retina. SFRP5 is highly expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium, as well as moderately expressed in the pancreas.

Phosphoserine aminotransferase (PSAT1) catalyzes the conversion of 3-phosphohydroxypyruvate into 3-phosphoserine which is dephosphorylated consequently by phosphoserine phosphatase to form L-serine. PSAT1 is probably a phosphoserine aminotransferase, based on similarity to proteins in mouse, rabbit, and Drosophila. PSAT1 is expressed at high levels in the brain, liver, kidney and pancreas, and very weakly expressed in the thymus, prostate, testis and colon. Defects in the PSAT1 gene are the cause of phosphoserine aminotransferase deficiency (PSATD). PSATD is distinguished biochemically by low plasma and cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of serine and glycine and clinically by intractable seizures, acquired microcephaly, hypertonia, and psychomotor retardation.

Complement factor H (CFH) is an important regulatory component of the alternative pathway of complement. CFH is prevents complement activation on host cells and tissues, mainly the kidney. CFH controls the formation and decay of the alternative pathway C3/C5 convertase and acts as a cofactor for factor I which proteolytically inactivates C3b when C3b is bound to factor H. The N-terminal 5 domains of CFH bind to C3b and inhibit binding of factor B thus reducing the formation of C3/C5 convertase. The viral core particles then migrate to the hepatocyte nucleus and the partially double-stranded, relaxed circular genomes (RC-DNA) are repaired to form a covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), which is the template for viral genomic and sub-genomic RNAs by cellular RNA polymerase II. Of these, the pregenomic RNA (pgRNA is selectively packaged into progeny capsids and is then reverse-transcribed into new RC-DNA. The core can either bud into the endoplasmic reticulum to be enveloped or exported from the cell or recycled back into the genome for conversion to cccDNA.

ATPase Transporting Beta 1 (ATP1B1) is a part of the family of Na+/K+ and H+/K+ ATPases beta chain proteins, and the subfamily of Na+/K+ -ATPases. Na+/K+ -ATPase is an essential membrane protein accountable for establishing and maintaining the electrochemical gradients of Na and K ions over the plasma membrane. These gradients are vital for osmoregulation, for sodium-coupled transport of a range of organic and inorganic molecules, and for electrical excitability of muscle and nerve. ATP1B1is combined of 2 subunits, a large catalytic subunit (alpha) and a smaller glycoprotein subunit (beta).
