DUSP23 is a member of the protein-tyrosine phosphatase family. DUSP23 is a protein phosphatase which facilitates dephosphorylation of phosphorylated proteins on Tyr and Ser/Thr residues. In vitro, DUSP23 dephosphorylate p44-ERK1 (MAPK3) but not p54 SAPK-beta (MAPK10). In addition, DUSP23 enhances activation of JNK and p38(MAPK14).

Bcl-2–associated X protein (Bax) belongs to the Bcl-2 protein family. Bax is a pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein containing BH1, BH2 and BH3 domains. Bax accelerates programmed cell death by binding to, and antagonizing the apoptosis repressor bcl2 or its adenovirus homolog e1b 19k protein. Bax induces the release of cytochrome c, activation of casp3, and thereby apoptosis. Bax is expressed in a wide variety of tissues, with highest levels in the testis and ovary. Tumor suppressor protein p53 upregulates the expression of BAX. Bax has been shown to be involved in p53-mediated apoptosis.

Borrelia belongs to a genus of bacteria of the spirochete phylum. Borrelia causes borreliosis, which is a zoonotic, vector-borne disease transmitted mainly by ticks and some by lice, depending on the species. Of the 36 known species of Borrelia, 12 are distinguished to cause Lyme disease or borreliosis and are transmitted by ticks. The main Borrelia species causing Lyme disease are Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia afzelii, and Borrelia garinii. The Borrelia genus members have a linear chromosome which is about 900 kbp in length as well as an excess of both linear and circular plasmids in the 5-220 kbp size range. The plasmids are atypical, as compared to most bacterial plasmids, since they contain many paralogous sequences, a large number of pseudogenes and, in some cases, essential genes. Moreover, a number of the plasmids have features suggesting that they are prophages.

EYA2 belongs to tyrosine phosphatase family which specifically dephosphorylates 'Tyr-142' of histone H2AX (H2AXY142ph). EYA2 promotes effective DNA mending by dephosphorylating H2AX, promoting the enlistment of DNA repair complexes having MDC1. FGF8 is part of the fibroblast growth factor family. Fibronectin Type III Domain Containing 5 (Irisin) is a newly discovered hormone, secreted into circulation by muscle, which acts on white adipocytes and promotes WAT “browning”. r-Irisin can reduce body weight and cause induction of brown adipocyte in vivo, including a capacity for thermogenic energy expenditure mediated by uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1). Irisin mature protein is comprised of 110 amino acid residues and two potential glycosylation sites. High levels of Irisin can be found in the heart whereas Very low expression is found in the colon, pancreas and spleen, if any.

Protein Phosphatase 1, Regulatory Subunit 8 (PPP1R8) is the RNA-binding subunit of a key species of protein phosphatase-1 in the nucleus. The PPP1R8 enzyme is an inhibitor subunit of the main nuclear protein phosphatase-1 (PP-1). PPP1R8 has RNA-binding activity however it doesn’t cleave RNA and may target PP-1 to RNA-associated substrates. TSG101 is a member of apparently inactive homologs of ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes. TSG101 contains a coiled-coil domain that interacts with stathmin, a cytosolic phosphoprotein implicated in tumorigenesis. TSG101 is involved in cell growth and differentiation and acts as a negative growth regulator. TSG101 in vitro steady-state expression is important for maintenance of genomic stability and cell cycle regulation. TSG101 mutations and alternative splicing occur in high rate in breast cancer and implicate that defects occur during breast cancer tumorigenesis and/or progression. TSG101 is a factor of the ESCRT-I complex, a monitor of vesicular trafficking process. TSG101 binds to ubiquitinated cargo proteins and is needed for the sorting of endocytic ubiquitinated cargos into multivesicular bodies. TSG101 is needed for completion of cytokinesis and is involved in cell growth and differentiation.

QKI is involved inmyelinization and oligodendrocyte differentiation, and it may play a role in schizophrenia. Defects or deletions in the QKI are linked with astrocytic tumors and may be implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Among the diseases associated with QKI are 6q terminal deletion syndrome, and schizophrenia.

WW domain-binding protein 2 (WBP2) is a steroid hormone receptor coactivator, which contains 1 GRAM domain. The globular WW domain is comprised of 38-40 semiconserved amino acids shared by proteins of various functions including structural, regulatory, and signaling proteins. This domain is involved in mediating protein-protein interactions through the binding of polyproline ligands. WBP2 binds to the WW domain of Yes kinase-associated protein(YAP1) via its PY motifs.

WWOX is a proapoptotic protein and a tumor suppressor protein. WWOX is found in all eukaryotes and involved in the regulation of a broad range of cellular functions such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing. Loss of WWOX expression is associated with pancreatobiliary cancers. Reduced expression levels of WWOX protein is associated with the pathogenesis of basal-like differentiation in breast cancer. WWOX induces apoptosis and inhibits human hepatocellular carcinoma cell growth through a mechanism enhanced by JNK inhibition.

Human Mucin-1 (CA15-3), aka MUC1, is a glycoprotein with extensive O-linked glycosylation of its extracellular domain. This protein has alpha and beta subunits that form a heterodimeric complex. The N-terminal alpha subunit roles in cell-adhesion and the C-terminal beta subunit is involved in cell signaling. Mucins line the apical surface of epithelial cells in the stomach, lungs, intestines, eyes and other tissues. Mucins protect the body from infection by pathogen binding to oligosaccharides in the extracellular domain, preventing the pathogen from reaching the cell surface. Overexpression of CA15-3 is often associated with colon, breast, ovarian, lung and pancreatic cancers.

L-Selectin belongs to a family of divalent cation-dependent carbohydrate-binding glycoproteins or adhesion molecules. The L-Selectin molecule is composed of various domains: one homologous to lectins, one to epidermal growth factor, and two to the consensus repeat units found in C3/C4 binding proteins.
L-selectin is expressed constitutively on lymphocytes, monocytes and granulocytes and interacts specifically with carbohydrate groups on activated endothelial cells. L-Selectin may be shed by proteolytic cleavage and circulating levels in biological fluids may be used as an indicator of various pathological conditions. L-Selectin is cleaved by ADAM17.
L-selectin works as a "homing receptor" for leukocytes to enter secondary lymphoid tissues via the high endothelial venules. Ligands present on endothelial cells will attach to leukocytes expressing L-selectin, which causes the leukocytes to become localized at that juncture. The receptor is also located on the cell surfaces of "naive" T cells, which have not yet encountered their particular antigen. This surface expression is lost following the cells activation.

Stem cell factor / KIT ligand (SCF) is a cytokine which binds CD117 (c-Kit). SCF is also known as "steel factor" or "c-kit ligand". SCF exists in two forms, cell surface bound SCF and soluble (or free) SCF. Soluble SCF is produced by the cleavage of surface bound SCF by metalloproteases.
SCF is a growth factor important for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells and other hematopoietic progenitor cells. One of its roles is to change the BFU-E (burst-forming unit-erythroid) cells, which are the earliest erythrocyte precursors in the erythrocytic series, into the CFU-E (colony-forming unit-erythroid).
