Complement Factor B, also known as CFB, encodes complement factor B which is a component of the alternative pathway of complement activation. Factor B circulates in the blood as a single chain polypeptide. Once the alternative pathway is activated it is cleaved by complement factor D yielding the noncatalytic chain Ba and the catalytic subunit Bb. The active subunit Bb is a serine protease which connects with C3b to form the alternative pathway C3 convertase. Also, Bb is involved in the proliferation of preactivated B lymphocytes, while Ba inhibits their proliferation.

Geminin is a 25 kDa nuclear protein, which inhibits DNA replication and is degraded during the mitotic phase of the cell cycle. Geminin controls replication by binding to the licensing factor Cdt1, and is involved in neural differentiation. In addition, Geminin directly interacts with Six3 and Hox homeodomain proteins during embryogenesis and inhibits their functions. Geminin can also promote DNA replication. Geminin has 2 roles in 2 different stages of the cell cycle: Geminin is a negative regulator of DNA replication during the “S phase” of the cell cycle. Inhibition of Geminin during the “S phase” (by RNAi) results in an additional round of replication of portions of the genome. During the “M phase” of the cell cycle (mitosis) Geminin stabilizes the replication factor Cdt1 promoting DNA replication during the next cell cycle. Moreover, inhibition of Geminin during mitosis (by RNAi) causes destabilization of Cdt1 protein and impairment of DNA replication during the next cell cycle. Geminin thus guarantees that only one round of replication occurs during each cell cycle. It was discovered that Geminin is overexpressed in a number of malignancies and cancer cell lines. This maintains the concept that Geminin has also a positive role in DNA replication and cell cycle progression. Geminin accumulates through S, G2 and M phases of the cell cycle but is absent during the G1 phase. During the metaphase/anaphase transition of mitosis Geminin levels decrease.

Uroplakin 2 (UPK2) is one of the proteins of the highly urothelium-specific integral membrane proteins of the asymmetric unit membrane which forms urothelium apical plaques in mammals. The asymmetric unit membrane is thought to strengthen the urothelium by preventing cell rupture during bladder distention. The UPK2 protein is expressed in the peripheral blood of bladder cancer patients with transitional cell carcinomas.

CNN1 is a member of the calponin family. CNN1 is a thin filament-associated protein which is involved in the regulation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction. CNN1 is able to bind to actin, calmodulin, troponin C and tropomyosin. Prevention of actomyosin Mg-ATPase activity is a result of interaction between calponin and actin.

VPS28 is a subunit of the ESCRT-I complex (endosomal complexes required for transport) involved in the sorting of ubiquitinated proteins. VPS28 is involved in endosomal sorting of cell surface receptors using a multivesicular body/late endosome pathway. VSP28 binding with the TSG101 may have significant roles in budding of Retroviruses, such as HIV-1 and Ebola virus.
VSP28 interacts with TSG101, VPS37B, VPS37C, FAM125A and FAM125B, and also with VPS36, this interaction mediates the association with the ESCRT-II complex. Furthermore it interacts with SNF8 and VPS25 and CEP55.

RBBP9, restricts to the nucleus and cytoplasm, is a retinoblastoma binding protein which takes part in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. RBBP9 cooperates with retinoblastoma (Rb) and offers cellular resistance to the growth-inhibitory effects of TGFbeta1, therefore enabling the cellular transformation process.

YWHAB belongs to the 14-3-3 family of proteins which are in charge for signal transduction by binding to phosphoserine-containing proteins. YWHAB is found in both plants and mammals. YWHAB protein interacts with RAF1 and CDC25 phosphatases,thus linking mitogenic signaling and the cell cycle machinery. YWHAB is an adapter protein involved in the regulation of a large spectrum of both general and specialized signaling pathway. YWHAB binds to a large number of proteins by recognition of a phosphoserine or phosphothreonine motif. Binding generally results in the modulation of the activity of the binding partner.

The 14-3-3 family of proteins plays a key regulatory role in signal transduction, checkpoint control, apoptotic and nutrient-sensing pathways. 14-3-3 proteins are highly conserved and ubiquitously expressed. REXO1 is an exonuclease domain-containing protein which binds to Elongin. The Elongin complex stimulates the rate of transcription elongation by RNA polymerase II by suppressing the transient pausing of the polymerase at many sites along the DNA template. REXO1 is composed of 1221 amino acids and its mRNA is ubiquitously expressed. REXO1 is a putative stem cell marker and is highly expressed in embryonic and adult stem cells.

Genotype is clinically important in determining potential response to interferon-based therapy and the required duration of such therapy. Genotypes 1 and 4 are less responsive to interferon-based treatment than are the other genotypes (2, 3, 5 and 6).

DERP1 has extensive endopeptidase specificity. DERP1 is N-glycosylated. N-glycanase treatment does not completely remove carbohydrates, suggesting that the protein contains additional glycosylation sites. DERP1 causes an allergic reaction in humans. Common symptoms of mite allergy are bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. DERP1 binds to IgE in 80% of patients with house dust allergy.

Ebolavirus (EVD) belongs to the Filoviridae family of proteins which is comprised of a single-strand, non-infectious RNA genome. EVD genome is about 19,000 base pairs long and covers 7 genes in the order 3'-UTR-NP-VP35-VP40-GP-VP30-VP24-L-5'-UTR. There are 4 different ebolaviruses such as: Zaire (EBO-Z), Sudan (EBO-S), Cote d’Ivoire (EBO-CI) and Reston (EBO-R) that differ in amino acid sequence and location of where the gene overlaps. Similar to filoviruses and ebolavirions, EVD is a filamentous element that could appear in 3 forms: shepherd's crook, U shape or a 6 shape. Ebolaviruses may be coiled, toroid, or branched. Most ebolavirions are 80nm wideand 14,000nm long.

SARS Coronavirus is an enveloped virus containing three outer structural proteins, namely the membrane (M), envelope (E), and spike (S) proteins. Spike (S)-glycoprotein of the virus interacts with a cellular receptor and mediates membrane fusion to allow viral entry into susceptible target cells. Accordingly, S-protein plays an important role in virus infection cycle and is the primary target of neutralizing antibodies.

Milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 protein (Mfge8) is pleiotropic secreted glycoprotein which promotes mammary gland morphogenesis, angiogenesis, and tumor progression. Mfge8 has also an imperative role in tissue homeostasis and the prevention of inflammation. Discoidin Domain Receptor Tyrosine Kinase 1 (DDR1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein which is a part of the discoidin-like domain containing subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases. DDR1 functions as cell surface receptor for fibrillar collagen and regulates cell attachment to the extracellular matrix, remodeling of the extracellular matrix, cell migration, differentiation, survival and cell proliferation. EPH Receptor A4 (Epha4), is a single-pass type 1 membrane protein which is a part of the protein kinase superfamily and ephrin receptor subfamily. Epha4 is a receptor tyrosine kinase which binds membrane-bound ephrin family ligands residing on adjacent cells, leading to contact-dependent bidirectional signaling into neighboring cells mainly in the nervous system and in erythropoiesis.

OVCA2 is a member of the UPF0483 family. Universally expressed, the OVCA2 expression is regulated by retinoids. OVCA2 cooperates with apoptosis-related protein Bag-1, which indicates that OVCA2 takes part in cell proliferation. OVCA2 is thought to perform as a serine-hydrolase due to its catalytic and structural characteristics. Additionally, OVCA2 is believed to be involved in tumor suppression because of its reduced expression in ovarian and other tumor cell lines.

60S ribosomal protein L26-like 1 (RPL26L1) is a member of the ribosomal protein family and has a role in protein synthesis. RPL26L1 is situated in the cytoplasm. RPL26L1 shares a great sequence similarity with ribosomal protein L26. Currently it is unknown whether the RPL26L1 is a functional ribosomal protein or if it has developed a function which is independent of the ribosome.
