PSG5 belongs to the PSG family, which are a highly connected group of secreted glycoproteins, vastly expressed in fetal placental syncytiotrophoblast cells. PSGs are can be found in serum from the first 2-3 weeks of pregnancy and at higher levels as the pregnancy progresses, up to e point where they are the highest fetal protein found in maternal blood at term. PSG5’s role is inducing secretion of TH2-type cytokines from monocytes and modulating the maternal immune system throughout the pregnancy, thus defending the semi-allotypic fetus from rejection.

Sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a beta-globulin which specifically binds steroid hormones; it is involved in the transport of sex steroids in plasma. The main site of SHBG synthesis is assumed to be the hepatocytes. The production of SHBG is regulated by androgen/estrogen balance, thyroid hormones, insulin and dietary factors, among others. The concentration of SHBG is a key factor regulating their distribution between protein-bound and free states. SHBG concentration determination is primarily significant in the evaluation of mild disorders of androgen metabolism and it allows detection of women with hirsutism who are likely to react to estrogen therapy. Testosterone/SHBG-ratios correlate well with both measured and calculated values for free testosterone thus aid to distinguish between subjects with excessive androgen activity and normal individuals. SHBG gene polymorphisms are linked with polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Since April 2012, cases of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been identified in various countries. Coronaviruses are the cause of the common cold, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and other severe illnesses with high mortality rates, all are classified into coronavirus family. MERS-CoV is a new type of SARS found in the coronavirus family causing severe pneumonia with sudden and serious respiratory illness with high mortality rates as well. Since January 27th 2015, the WHO has reported 956 human cases, including 351 deaths. More cases of the new coronavirus strain are expected. Like in other coronaviruses, large surface spike glycoprotein is a central structural protein of this virus; it is located above the virion surface to bind and enter into the target cell. Spike protein has 2 domains- S1 and S2. The S1 domain is responsible for cellular tropism and interaction with target cell, while the S2 domain is responsible for membrane fusion. The C-terminal of S1 domain contains a receptor binding domain, and is also a potential target for vaccine development and an antigen for diagnosis.

Hsp70-binding protein 1 (HSPBP1) is a member of a family of eukaryotic proteins identified as nucleotide exchange factors for HSP 70 that exhibit varying degrees of compartment and species specificity. HSPBP1 is localized mainly in cytoplasm and nucleus but is also found extracellularly. HSPBP1 is mostly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle .HSPBP1 binds to HSP 70, inhibits its activity and promotes dissociation of nucleotides from the HSP 70 ATPase domain. In addition, HSPBP1 inhibits HSPA1A chaperone activity by changing the conformation of the ATP-binding domain of HSPA1A and obstructing the ATP binding. HSPBP1 may also have a role in tumor (dys)regulation of chaperone proteins. Furthermore, HSPBP1 hinders ubiquitination mediated by STUB1 and inhibits chaperone-assisted degradation of immature CFTR.

Spike (S)-glycoprotein of the virus interacts with a cellular receptor and mediates membrane fusion to allow viral entry into susceptible target cells. Accordingly, S-protein plays an important role in virus infection cycle and is the primary target of neutralizing antibodies.

Heat shock prtein beta-6, also known as HSPB6 is a member of the small heat shock protein (HSP20) family. This locus encodes a heat shock protein. HSPB6 plays a role in smooth muscle relaxation. Polymorphisms in the GSK3B gene have been implicated in modifying risk of Parkinson disease, and studies in mice show that overexpression of the GSK3B gene may be significant to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease.

S100b is a member of the S100 family of proteins which are a family of EF-hand calcium binding proteins that exist mostly as dimers of the 20 currently identified individual S100 monomers. The S100B homodimer is expressed in cells of the central nervous system, glial cells and in certain peripheral cells e.g. Schwann cells, melanocytes, adipocytes and chondrocytes. S100 proteins are localized either in the cytoplasm or the nucleus of a wide range of cells. S100 proteins are involved in the regulation of a number of cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. HscB Iron-Sulfur Cluster Co-Chaperone (HSCB) is a member of the hscB family and contains 1 J domain. HSCB is expressed in the lung, brain, stomach, spleen, ovary, testis, liver, muscle and heart and localized to mitochondria and cytoplasm. HSCB may function as a co-chaperone in iron-sulfur cluster assembly in mitochondria, it also interacts with ISCU and HSPA9.

SDF-1 (stromal cell-derived factor-1) is small cytokine belonging to the chemokine family that is officially designated Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 12 (CXCL12). It is produced in two forms, SDF-1?/CXCL12a and SDF-1?/CXCL12b, by alternate splicing of the same gene. Chemokines are characterized by the presence of four conserved cysteines, which form two disulfide bonds. The CXCL12 proteins belong to the group of CXC chemokines, whose initial pair of cysteines are separated by one intervening amino acid. CXCL12 is strongly chemotactic for lymphocytes and has been implicated as an important cell co-ordinator during development. During embryogenesis it directs the migration of hematopoietic cells from foetal liver to bone marrow. Mice which were knocked-out for CXCL12 gene were lethal before the birth or within just 1 hour of life. As another role, CXCL12a alters also the electrophysiology of neurons. CXCL12 was shown to be expressend in many tissues in mice (including brain, thymus, heart, lung, liver, kidney, spleen and bone marrow).

PEBP1 is expressed in many tissues and implicated in the regulation of such physiological processes as membrane biosynthesis, spermatogenesis, neural development, and metastasis suppression.

HSPB8 participates in the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and carcinogenesis. Mutations in HSPB8 gene have been related with different neuromuscular diseases, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
