HSA is synthesized in the liver as preproalbumin which has an N-terminal peptide that is removed before the nascent protein is released from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The product, proalbumin, is in turn cleaved in the Golgi vesicles to produce the secreted HSA. HSA is a soluble, monomeric protein which comprises about one-half of the blood serum protein. HSA functions primarily as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones and plays a role in stabilizing extracellular fluid volume. Mutations in this gene on chromosome 4 result in various anomalous proteins. HSA is a globular unglycosylated serum protein of molecular weight 65,000. The human HSA gene is 16,961 nucleotides long from the putative 'cap' site to the first poly (A) addition site. It is split into 15 exons which are symmetrically placed within the 3 domains that are thought to have arisen by triplication of a single primordial domain.
HSA is widely used to stabilize blood volume generally from donors but the fear of contamination such as HIV & Hepatitis has enticed great interest in the recombinant form which is identical to the natural blood.

UFC1 is a member of the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. UFC1 is an E2-like conjugating enzyme for ubiquitin-fold modifier-1. UFM1 is activated by UBA5 (a novel E1-like enzyme) by forming a high-energy thioester bond. Activated UFM1 is subsequently transferred to its cognate E2-like enzyme, UFC1, in a similar thioester linkage.

PDCD6 is a calcium-binding protein and is a member of the penta-EF-hand protein family. Calcium binding is vital for homodimerization and for conformational changes essential for binding to other protein partners. PDCD6 takes part in T cell receptor-, Fas-, and glucocorticoid-induced programmed cell death. However, tests showed that in mice deficient for PDCD6, apoptosis was not blocked which suggests that PDCD6 is functionally redundant.

ATG3 is localizes to the cytoplasm and is expressed in tissues with predominant levels found in kidney, placenta, liver, heart and skeletal muscle. ATG3 catalyzes a reaction which is necessary for autophagy. That reaction is the formation of the Atg8-phosphatidylethanolamine (ATG-PE) conjugate.

The central portion of SPA17 has carbohydrate binding motifs and likely takes part in cell-cell adhesion functions such as immune cell migration and metastasis.

Synaptotagmin V, (SYT5) is a member of synaptotagmin family, which is a family of type III membrane proteins characterized by cytoplasmic repeats related to protein kinase C regulatory (C2) domains that are considered to bind calcium. Synaptotagmins function as negative regulators of vesicle fusion, allowing fusion in the attendance of calcium, and as calcium receptors or sensor molecules. Among the diseases associated with SYT5 are labyrinthitis, and thyroiditis.

Ubiquitin-like-conjugating enzyme ATG10 (ATG10) is a 220 amino acid protein which localizes to the cytoplasm and has a role in autophagy, specifically acting as an E2-like enzyme providing Atg recognition sites during autophagosome synthesis. ATG10 functions as an E2-like enzyme which catalyzes the conjugation of ATG12 to ATG5, which is required for autophagy. In addition, ATG10 interacts with ATG12 in human embryonic kidney cells in the presence of ATG7. ATG10 probably serves as an ATG5-recognition molecule. Furthermore, ATG10 has a role in adenovirus-mediated cell lysis.

KISS1 is a metastasis suppressor protein that suppresses metastases of melanomas and breast carcinomas without affecting tumorigenicity.KISS1 functions to inhibit chemotaxis and invasion, attenuating metastasis in malignant melanomas. Activation of the receptor inhibits cell proliferation and cell migration, key characteristics of tumor metastasis.

Aspartic Peptidase, Retroviral-Like 1 (ASPRV1) is a protein which contains one peptidase A2 domain. ASPRV1 undergoes autocleavage which is essential for activation of the protein. ASPRV1 is expressed mostly in the granular layer of the epidermis and inner root sheath of hair follicles and localized to membrane region. In the psoriatic skin, ASPRV1 is expressed throughout the stratum corneum. In the ulcerated skin, ASPRV1 is expressed in the stratum granulosum of intact epidermis; however it is virtually nonexistent from ulcerated regions. In addition, ASPRV1 is expressed in differentiated areas of squamous cell carcinomas but not in the undifferentiated tumors.

Streptavidin is a tetrameric protein secreted by Streptomyces avidinii which binds firmly to biotin. Streptavidin is wilyde used in molecular biology through its unique high affinity for the vitamin biotin. The dissociation constant (Kd) of the biotin-streptavidin complex is about ~10-15 mol/L. The strong affinity recognition of biotin and biotinylated molecules has made streptavidin one of the most important components in diagnostics and laboratory kits. URM1 is ubiquitin-related modifier 1 homolog protein which mainly functions in the post-translational modification of proteins via the urmylation pathway. A subpopulation of form I is then transformed to a smaller form (form II). Form II, with an exposed C-terminal glycine, is deemed to be the phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)-conjugated form, and is capable of binding to autophagosomes. Reduced levels of autophagy are seen in some malignant tumors; therefore autophagy may have a role in controlling the unregulated cell growth linked to cancer.

Protein A is a cell wall protein deriving from Staphylococcus aureus which exhibits unique binding properties for IgG from a variety of mammalian species and for some IgM and IgA as well. It binds with the Fc region of immunoglobulins through interaction with the heavy chain. It couples to a wide variety of reporter molecules including fluorescent dyes, enzyme markers, biotin, colloidal gold and radioactive iodine without affecting the antibody binding site. Recombinant Protein A was developed to increase the specificity of the molecule for IgG and is widely used both in research and bioprocessing. The recombinant protein A is produced by expressing a modified protein A gene in E.coli. Platelet factor-4 is a 70-amino acid protein that is released from the alpha-granules of activated platelets and binds with high affinity to heparin. Its major physiologic role appears to be neutralization of heparin-like molecules on the endothelial surface of blood vessels, thereby inhibiting local antithrombin III activity and promoting coagulation. As a strong chemoattractant for neutrophils and fibroblasts, PF4 probably has a role in inflammation and wound repair. Oncostatin-A is a member of the CXC chemokine family. MAP1LC3B is a subunit of neuronal microtubule-associated MAP1A and MAP1B proteins, that are involved in microtubule assembly and important for neurogenesis. In addition, MAP1LC3B takes part in formation of autophagosomal vacuoles and is expressed mainly in heart, testis, brain and skeletal muscle.
