Introduction
N-acetylneuraminate lyase (NanA) is a member of a family of lyases, specifically the oxo-acid-lyases, which cleave carbon-carbon bonds. NanA catalyzes the cleavage of N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid) to form pyruvate and N-acetyl-D-mannosamine. NanA is inhibited by reduction with NaBH4 in the presence of the substrate, which indicates that it belongs to the Schiff-base-forming Class I aldolases. NanA is strongly inhibited by Cu2+ ions, p-chloromercuribenzoate and N-bromosuccinimide, it is also inhibited competitively by the reaction product, pyruvate, and its structurally related compounds, dihydroxyacetone and DL-glyceraldehyde.

IMPDH2 is a member of the IMPDH/GMPR family. IMPDH2 catalyzes the NAD-dependent oxidation of inosine-5'-monophosphate into xanthine-5'-monophosphate, which is afterward converted into guanosine-5'-monophosphate. IMPDH2 is the rate-limiting enzyme in the de novo guanine nucleotide biosynthesis. IMPDH2 is consequently involved in maintaining cellular guanine deoxy- and ribonucleotide pools required for DNA and RNA synthesis. In addition, IMPDH1 and IMPDH2 are targets for the important immunosuppressive drug, MPA. Furthermore, the IMPDH2 gene is up-regulated in some neoplasms, suggesting it may have a role in malignant transformation.

ALDH5A1 is a mitochondrial NAD(+)-dependent succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, which is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. The ALDH5A1 protein functions as a mediator to the NADP+-dependent oxidation of aldehydes into acids and has an imperative role in the detoxification of alcohol-derived acetaldehyde, as well as in lipid peroxidation and in the metabolism of corticosteroids, biogenic amines and neurotransmitters. ALDH5A1 is expressed in various tissues, including the liver, heart, lung, brain, kidney and placenta. Deficiency in the ALDH5A1 enzyme, known as 4-hydroxybutyricaciduria, is a rare inborn error in the metabolism of the neurotransmitter 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
