Cytoplasmic Polyadenylation Element Binding Protein 1 (CPEB1) belongs to the cytoplasmic polyadenylation element (CPE) binding protein family, whose members regulate translation of cyclin B1 during embryonic cell divisions. The CPEB1 is a highly conserved protein which binds to a specific RNA sequence called the CPE found in the 3' UTR of some mRNAs. Analogous proteins in Xenopus and mouse function to stimulate cytoplasmic polyadenylation of dormant mRNAs with short polyA tails, resulting in their translation.

XIAP Associated Factor 1 (XAF1) is a protein which binds to and counteracts the inhibitory effect of a member of the IAP (inhibitor of apoptosis) protein family. IAP proteins bind to and inhibit caspases which are activated in the course of apoptosis. The ratio of IAPs and proteins which interfere with their activity, such as the XAF1 protein, influence the progress of the apoptosis signaling pathway. Additionally, XAF1 inhibits anti-caspase activity of BIRC4. XAF1 induces cleavage and inactivation of BIRC4 independent of caspase activation. Furthermore, XAF1 mediates TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis and is involved in apoptosis in trophoblast cells.

BPNT1 belongs to the magnesium-dependent, lithium-sensitive phosphomono-esterase superfamily. BPNT1 catalyzes the conversion of PAPS (adenosine 3'-phosphate 5' phosphosulfate) to APS (adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate) and the conversion of PAP (3'(2')-phosphoadenosine 5' phosphate) to AMP (adenosine 5'-phosphate) using magnesium as a cofactor. BPNT1 is expressed everywhere but at maximum levels in brain and kidney. BPNT1 is potently inhibited by lithium, a drug used for the treatment of manic depression and bipolar affective disorder, which suggests that BPNT1 has a possible role in the etiology of mood disorders.

Tubulin, beta 3 class III (TUBB3), which is the major constituent of microtubules, is primarily Expressed in neurons and is involved in neurogenesis and in axon guidance and maintenance. TUBB3 binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha-chain.

Treponema pallidum is a gram-negative spirochaete bacterium and is considered to be metabolically crippled. There are at least four known subspecies: T. pallidum pallidum, T. pallidum pertenue, T. pallidum carateum and T. pallidum endemicum. The helical structure of T. pallidum pallidum allows it to move in a corkscrew motion through viscous mediums such as mucus. Treponema pallidum sub sp. pallidum has one of the smallest bacterial genomes at 1.14 million base pairs (Mb) and has limited metabolic capabilities, reflecting its adaptation through genome reduction to the rich environment of mammalian tissue.

U2 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein A (SNRPA1), a 255 amino acid protein, is a component of the U2 snRNP which forms a complex with U2 snRNP B (U2B). U2 snRNP A and U2 snRNP B form together a complex which binds to the U2 snRNA hairpin IV. The configuration of the U2 snRNP A/U2 snRNP B dimer and the delicate variations of a few key residues regulate the snRNP-RNA-binding specificity.

BLVRB (EC 1.3.1.24) catalyzes electron transfer from reduced pyridine nucleotides to flavins as well as methylene blue, pyrroloquinoline quinone, riboflavin, or methemoglobin. BLVRB is involved in protecting cells from oxidative damage or in regulating iron metabolism. BLVRB converts biliverdin to bilirubin in the liver, converting a double-bond between the second and third pyrrole ring into a single-bond. BLVRB plays a role as in human erythrocytic heme catabolic pathway and most mammalian species. LDHA catalyzes the conversion of L-lactate and NAD to pyruvate and NADH in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis. LDHA is localized primarily in muscle tissue and is part of the lactate dehydrogenase family. Mutations in LDHA have been linked to exertional myoglobinuria. LDH1 is decreased in essential thrombocythemia. LDHA is induced through a non-genomic pathway of estrogen action. Synaptobrevin-2 or VAMP2 is a protein that has a proline-rich N-terminal part, highly conserved hydrophilic domain, a transmembrane anchor and a C-terminal.VAMP2 found in the transmembrane region of the cell, in the cytoplasmic surface of the synaptic vesicle. The protein is mainly found in the Langerhans islets in the pancreas and glomerular cells in the kidney. Peptidoglycan Recognition Protein 1 (PGLYRP1) is a member of the N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase 2 family. PGLYRP1 binds to peptidoglycan of bacteria and affects the peptidoglycan biosynthesis. PGLYRP1 displays bactericidal activity towards Gram-positive bacteria and is bacteriostatic towards Gram-negative bacteria. PGLYRP1 has a role in innate immunity. PGLYRP1 is highly expressed in the bone marrow, and weakly expressed in the kidney, liver, small intestine, spleen, thymus, peripheral leukocyte, lung, fetal spleen and neutrophils.

High-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), previously known as HMG-1 or amphoterin, is a member of the high mobility group box family of non-histone chromosomal proteins. Human HMGB1 is expressed as a 30 kDa, 215 amino acid (aa) single chain polypeptide containing three domains: two N-terminal globular, 70 aa positively charged DNA-binding domains (HMG boxes A and B), and a negatively charged 30 aa C-terminal region that contains only Asp and Glu.4, 5 Residues 27 - 43 and 178 - 184 contain a NLS. Posttranslational modifications of the molecule have been reported, with acetylation occurring on as many as 17 lysine residues. HMGB1 is expressed at high levels in almost all cells. It was originally discovered as a nuclear protein that could bend DNA. Such bending stabilizes nucleosome formation and regulates the expression of select genes upon recruitment by DNA binding proteins.

Prolactin is a pituitary hormone involved in the stimulation of milk production, salt and water regulation, growth, development and reproduction. The initial step in its action is the binding to a specific membrane receptor (prolactin receptor) which belongs to the superfamily of class 1 cytokine receptors. The function of the prolactin receptor is mediated, at least in part, by two families of signaling molecules: Janus kinases and signal transducers and activators of transcription. Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone involved in a variety of important functions including ion transport and osmoregulation, stimulation of milk, protein synthesis as well as the regulation of numerous reproductive functions. PRL exerts its influence on different cell types through a signal transduction pathway which begins with the binding of the hormone to a transmembrane PRL receptor. Immunoreactive PRL receptor, a member of the cytokine receptor family, varies in size (short and long forms) with tissue source and species, from ~40 kDa to 100 kDa. 40S ribosomal protein S18 (RPS18) is a member of the ribosomal protein S13P family.RPS18 is located in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes, the organelles which catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit.Jointly these subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. RPS18 encodes a ribosomal protein which is a component of the 40S subunit. RPS18 is a recognized binding partner of Cofilin and has been proposed to be a novel substrate for CaMKII. Among the diseases associated with RPS18 are bowen-conradi syndrome, and pasteurellosis.

Elongin B (Elob) is a subunit of the transcription factor B (SIII) complex. SIII complex is a general transcription elongation factor that increases the RNA polymerase II transcription elongation past template-encoded arresting sites. The SIII complex comprised of a transcriptionally active subunit (A) and 2 regulatory subunits (B and C). Subunit A is transcriptionally active and its transcription activity is enhanced by binding to the dimeric complex of the SIII regulatory subunits B and C. The von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein binds to elongin B and C and inhibits transcription elongation.

IL-28B is a cytokine remotely related to type I IFNs and the IL-10 family. Interleukin-28B, interleukin 28A (IL28A), and interleukin 29 (IL29) are 3 closely related cytokine genes which form a cytokine gene cluster on a chromosomal region mapped to 19q13. Expression of the cytokines encoded by these 3 genes can be induced by viral infection. S100A11 is a member of the S100 family of proteins which contains two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs and is thought to be involved in the regulation of a number of cellular processes including cell cycle progression and differentiation. S100A11 may function in motility, invasion and tubulin polymerisation. S100 proteins are localized either in the cytoplasm or the nucleus of a wide range of cells. There are at least 13 members in the S100 gene family, which are located as a cluster on chromosome 1q21. AFAP1 is a possible modulator of actin filament integrity in response to cellular signals, and is also playing a role as an adaptor protein by connecting Src family members to actin filaments. AFAP1 takes partin the development and progression of prostate adenocarcinoma by regulating cell-matrix adhesions and migration in the cancer cells.

AKAP7 is a member of the A-kinase anchoring protein (AKAP) family, a group of functionally related proteins which bind to a regulatory subunit (RII) of cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) and target the enzyme to specific subcellular sections. AKAP7 is expressed in heart, brain, pancreas, lung and skeletal muscle. AKAP7 binds PKA to the plasma membrane, and allows efficient coupling to the L-type calcium channel.
