The cytokine IL-1 alpha or hematopoietin 1 is a member to the interleukin 1 family, encoded by the IL1A gene in humans. Essentially Il-1 is in charge of inflammation and the rising of fever and sepsis. In this form, it circulates in the plasma, prolonging the half-life of IGFs and altering their interaction with cell surface receptors. Alternate transcriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized.

KLF4 (aka the gut-enriched Kruppel-like factor-GKLF), is a zinc finger-containing transcription factor which is a member of the Kruppel-like family of transcription factors.
