Pro-opiomelanocortin preproprotein (POMC) is a polypeptide hormone precursor which experiences extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing via cleavage by subtilisin-like enzymes known as prohormone convertases. POMC regulates the corticosteroid production in the adrenal cortex. Furthermore, POMC is cleaved into ten hormone chains named NPP, g-MSH, ACTH, a-MSH, CLIP, Lipotropin b, Lipotropin g, b-MSH,b endorphin and Met-enkephalin. POMC gene defects are the cause of POMC deficiency, which is characterized by red hair and adrenal insufficiency.

They thereby serve as transporters of substances like retinal, biliverdins & prostaglandins. There are indications that NGAL is involved in modulation of the inflammatory response and is found in the plasma of patients after stroke.

Membrane Metalloendopeptidase, also known as MME is a zinc metallopeptidase which is expressed at the cell surface of various cells. MME degrades the amyloid beta peptide whose abnormal misfolding as well as aggregation in neural tissue has been implicated as the cause for Alzheimer's disease. MME is expressed in an extended range of tissues and is especially plentiful in the kidney. MME is also a common acute lymphocytic leukemia antigen which is a significant cell surface marker in the diagnosis of human acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). MME is used in hematological diagnosis because it is expressed by early B, pro-B and pre-B lymphocytes, and also by lymph node germinal centers.

MGLL is a membrane-associated member of the serine hydrolase superfamily. MGLL is expressed in abundance in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. MGLL functions jointly with hormone-sensitive lipase (LIPE) to hydrolyze intracellular triglyceride stores in adipocytes and other cells to fatty acids and glycerol. GPN-loop GTPase 1 (GPN1) is a member of the GPN-loop GTPase family. GPN1 is a guanosine triphosphatase enzyme which has a role in DNA repair and may function in activation of transcription. Small GTPases, which share a biochemical mechanism, act as binary molecular switches and function in the cell is nucleocytoplasmic transport of both proteins and RNA. In addition, GPN1 establishs an interface between the RNA polymerase II enzyme and chaperone/scaffolding protein, proposing that it is essential to connect RNA polymerase II to regulators of protein complex formation. GPN1 may also be involved in nuclear localization of XPA.

Acid phosphatase, prostate (ACPP) is a non-specific tyrosine phosphatase, which dephosphorylates a varied number of substrates under acidic conditions (pH 4-6) including alkyl, aryl, and acyl orthophosphate monoesters and phosphorylated proteins.
