    • Introduction

      Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 21 (CCL21) is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family. This chemokine is also known as 6Ckine (because it has six conserved cysteine residues instead of the four cysteines typical to chemokines), exodus-2, and secondary lymphoid-tissue chemokine (SLC). CCL21 is expressed predominantly in the lymph nodes and, in contrast to other CC chemokines, is chemotactic for lymphocytes. The gene for CCL21 is located on human chromosome 9. CCL21 elicits its effects by binding to a cell surface chemokine receptor known as CCR7.

Please prevent freeze-thaw cycles.

      Also known as IFN-gamma inducing factor, Interleukin-18 or IL18 is a protein. In humans this protein is encoded by the IL18 gene. The protein is a proinflammatory cytokine.

      Mechanism
      The levels of IL-18 in the human body are increased at sites of inflammation. This includes cases of rheumatoid arthritis as well as other similar conditions. Osteoblastic cells express the protein and it is capable of inhibiting osteoclast formation. It is able to do this through a variety of mechanisms.
      For instance, it is able to stimulate GM-CSF. This is created by T cells and is a response to treatment using IL-18. As well as this, the cytokine does stimulate INF-y production through vivo in bone. Furthermore, the impact on bone resorption and osteoclastogenesis is increased when used in conjunction with IL-12 treatment. Studies have shown that IL-18 provides an indirect stimulus on osteoclastogenesis due to the effect it has on T lymphocytes.

      Interleukin-35 is a glycosylated, disulfide-linked, heterodimeric protein comprised of the p35 subunit of IL-12 (IL-12 alpha) and the beta subunit of IL-27 (EBI3). IL35 is expressed by regulatory T-cells (Tregs), macrophages and some trophoblast and dendritic cells. IL-35 is produced in response to inflammation and generally serves as an inflammation suppressor. Interleukin-35 curbs inflammation by applying multiple activities, including the stimulation of regulatory T-cells and the inhibition of Th17 cells.

      IL13 is an immunoregulatory cytokine produced primarily by activated Th2 cells. IL-13 is involved in several stages of B-cell maturation and differentiation. It up-regulates CD23 and MHC class II expression, and promotes IgE isotype switching of B cells.       IL-16 is a pleiotropic cytokine that functions as a chemoattractant, a modulator of T cell activation, and an inhibitor of HIV replication. The signaling process of IL-16 is mediated by CD4. The product of this gene undergoes proteolytic processing, which is found to yield two functional proteins. IL-16 functions exclusively attributed to the secreted C-terminal peptide, while the N-terminal product may play a role in cell cycle control. Caspase 3 is reported to be involved in the proteolytic processing of this protein. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
      IL-16 stimulates a migratory response in cd4+ lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils. Also induces t-lymphocyte expression of interleukin 2 receptor, ligand for cd4.
