    • Introduction

      Cathepsin D is synthesized as a 54kDa precursor, which is proteolytically processed to an intermediate 48kDa single chain, which matures into more stable 34kDa and 14kDa two chain form. It is an estrogen-regulated lysosomal protease that has been suggested to facilitate cancer cell migration and invasion by digesting the basement membrane, extracellular matrix, and xonnective tissue. Because of its mitogenic and proteolytic activities, it has been implicated as a prognostic marker in many tumor types. Cathepsin D is expressed in epithelial cells as well as in macrophages.

      Thiosulfate sulfurtransferase like domain containing 1 (TSTD1) is a member of a family of transferases, specifically the sulfurtransferases, which transfer sulfur-containing groups. TSTD1 is localized around the nuclear membranes. TSTD1 is expressed in a number of human tissues, including the kidney, liver, skeletal muscle, heart, colon, thymus, spleen, placenta and lung. TSTD1 may participate in cyanide detoxification, the formation of iron-sulfur proteins, and the modification of sulfur-containing enzymes.

      Set 7/9 is a histone methyltransferase (HMTase) that transfers methyl groups to Lys4 of histone H3, in complex with S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet). The methylation of lysine residues of histones plays a critical role in the regulation of chromatin structure and gene expression.
      Acetylation, phosphorylation and methylation of the amino-terminal tails of histone are thought to be involved in the regulation of chromatin structure and function. The enzymes identified in the methylation of specific lysine residue on histones belong to the SET family with just one exception. Set7/9, unlike most other SET proteins, is exclusively a mono-methylase.

UCHL3 takes part in the regulation of neuronal development and spermatogenesis and is associated to neurodegenerative diseases. UCHL3 has a 54% homology to UCHL1.
