Nucleobindin-2 (also known as NUCB2 or Nesfatin) is a EF-hand calcium-binding protein. Nucleobindin-2 takes part in calcium homeostasis and is a multifunctional protein that interacts with Ca(2+) nucleic acids & various regulatory proteins in different signaling pathways. NUCB2 (Nesfatin) is localized in neuronal perikarya and dendrites of mouse brain.

Four and a half LIM domains 3 (FHL3) belongs to a family of proteins containing a four-and-a-half LIM domain, which is a highly conserved double zinc finger motif. FHL3 has been shown to interact with the cancer developmental regulators SMAD2, SMAD3, and SMAD4, the skeletal muscle myogenesis protein MyoD, and the high-affinity IgE beta chain regulator MZF-1. FHL3 is involved in tumor suppression, repression of MyoD expression, and repression of IgE receptor expression. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

PRRX1 is part of the paired family of homeobox proteins. PRRX1 functions as a transcription co-activator, enhancing the DNA-binding activity of serum response factor, a protein required for the induction of genes by growth and differentiation factors. PRRX1 also regulates muscle creatine kinase, and therefore has a part in the establishment of diverse mesodermal muscle types. The protein binds to an A/T-rich element in the muscle creatine enhancer. Among the diseases associated with PRRX1 are agnathia-otocephaly complex, and pleomorphic liposarcoma.

RHOC is a small signaling G protein/GTPase which is part of the Rac subfamily of the family Rho family of GTPases. RHOC rotats between inactive GDP-bound and active GTP-bound states and has a role as a molecular switch in signal transduction cascades. RHOC promotes reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and regulates cell shape, attachment, and motility.

BCL2 gene encodes an integral outer mitochondrial membrane protein that blocks the apoptotic death of some cells such as lymphocytes. Constitutive expression of BCL2, such as in the case of translocation of BCL2 to Ig heavy chain locus, is thought to be the cause of follicular lymphoma. Major Histocompatibility Complex Class II DO Alpha (HLA-DOA) is a significant modulator in the HLA class II restricted antigen presentation pathway by interaction with the HLA-DM molecule in B-cells. HLA-DOA forms a heterodimer along with HLA-DOB. The heterodimer is located in lysosomes in B cells and regulates HLA-DM-mediated peptide loading on MHC class II molecules. HLA-DOA exhibits very little sequence variation, particularly at the protein level.

Tumor suppressor p53 is necessary for maintenance of cellular genetic integrity by moderating cell fate through DNA repair versus cell death. C17orf103 is also related to neurofibromatosis, a disorder characterized by neural and epidermal lesions, and dysregulated Schwann cell growth.

Profilin1 (PFN1) is a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein which is a member of the profilin family. PFN1 significantly boosts skin wound healing in-vitro and in-vivo which may be mediated by purinergic receptors. PFN1 is also active in endothelial cell migration and vessel sprouting. PFN1 is thought to control actin polymerization in response to extracellular signals. PFN1 binds to actin and affects the formation of the cytoskeleton. In addition, PFN1 has an important role in the regulation of epithelial cell-cell adhesion. At high concentrations, profilin averts the polymerization of actin, while at low concentrations it enhances the polymerization. PFN1 gene deletion is linked to Miller-Dieker syndrome.

TUBG1 belongs to the tubulin superfamily. TUBG1 localizes to the centrosome and binds to microtubules to create the gamma-tubulin ring complex. TUBG1 facilitates the microtubule nucleation and is essential for microtubule formation and progression of the cell cycle.

CCL13 chemokine is part of the CC chemokine family (TARC). CCL13 protein induces chemotaxis in monocytes, eosinophils, T lymphocytes, and basophils by binding cell surface G-protein linked chemokine receptors such as CCR2, CCR3 and CCR5. CCL13 is induced by the inflammatory cytokines IL1 & TNFA.

CFI cleaves and inactivates C3b and C4b. CFI is inactive without a cofactor such as the soluble factor H and C4b binding protein. HDL is a complex of lipids and proteins in approximately equal amounts that functions as a transporter of cholesterol in the blood. HDL is the smallest of the lipoprotein particles; it’s the densest because it contains the highest proportion of protein. The liver synthesizes these lipoproteins as complexes of apolipoproteins and phospholipid, which bear a resemblance to cholesterol-free flattened spherical lipoprotein particles. They pick up cholesterol; carry it internally, from cells by interaction with the ATP Binding Cassette Transporter A1. Lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (plasma enzyme) converts the free cholesterol into cholesteryl ester (a more hydrophobic form of cholesterol) which is then sequestered into the core of the lipoprotein particle ultimately making the newly synthesized HDL spherical. They increase in size as they pass through the bloodstream and integrate more cholesterol and phospholipid molecules from cells and other lipoproteins, for instance by the interaction with the ABCG1 transporter and the phospholipid transport protein. HDL transports their cholesterol generally to the liver or steroidogenic organs such as adrenals, ovary and testes by direct and indirect pathways. The release of HDL cholesterol to adrenals, ovaries and testes is important for the synthesis of steroid hormones. Since the triglycerides are not stable in HDL, they’re degraded by hepatic lipase in order that finally small HDL particles are left which resume the uptake of cholesterol from cells. The cholesterol supplied to the liver is excreted into the bile and consequently intestine either directly or indirectly after conversion into bile acids. High levels of HDL are associated with a decreased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

FGF8 is part of the fibroblast growth factor family. FGF8 supports androgen and anchorage independent growth of mammary tumor cells. FGF8 over expression increases tumor growth and angiogensis. Thrombomodulin, also referred to THBD, is an endothelial cell-expressed, transmembrane glycoprotein that can form a complex with the coagulation factor, thrombin. This complex increasethe activation of protein C in the anticoagulant pathway by forming a 1:1 stoichiometric complex with thrombin. Thrombomodulinbound thrombin has procoagulant effect at the same time by inhibiting fibrinolysis by cleaving thrombinactivatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) into its active form. Reduced levels of thrombomodulin or increased serum levels of THBD can correlate with pathogenesis of certain cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Furthermore, it associated with, diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, cerebral & myocardial infarction, and multiple sclerosis.

HBsAg is the surface antigenof the Hepatitis-B-Virus (HBV). The capsidof a virus has different surface proteins from the rest of the virus. The antigen is a protein that binds specifically on one of these surface proteins. It is commonly referred to as the Australian Antigen.

DHH is part of the Hedgehog family which encodes signaling molecules that are involved in regulating morphogenesis. DHH protein is a precursor that is autocatalytically cleaved, the N-terminal portion is soluble and contains the signalling activity while the C-terminal portion is involved in precursor processing. Additionally, the C-terminal product covalently attaches a cholesterol moiety to the N-terminal product, restricting the N-terminal product to the cell surface and preventing it from freely diffusing throughout the organism. Defects in DHH protein have been associated with partial gonadal dysgenesis (PGD) accompanied by minifascicular polyneuropathy. DHH plays a role both male gonadal differentiation and perineurial development.

EFNB1 is a member of the Eph family. The cell-surface proteins Ephrins split into two groups, ephrin-A and ephrin-B, based on their structure and function and perform as ligands for Eph receptors. The transmembrane EFNB1 proteins have conserved cytoplasmic tyrosine residues that are phosphorylated upon interaction with an EphB receptor. Hepatitis B virus is the main cause for human liver disease, chronic infection frequently causes liver cancer and cirrhosis. The pre-core protein contains an extra 29 N-terminal amino acids, serving as a signal peptide to direct the nascent polypeptide into secretory pathway. After the secretion, mature HBeAg is deleted at the residue 149 C-terminally and retains 10 precore residues N-terminally. HBcAg and HBeAg are distinctly recognized by antibodies but highly cross-reactive at the T-cell level.
The e antigen is found in the circulation, it is found during the active HBV infection, positive result indicates the risk for contagiousness, and is also used as indicator for the effectiveness of HBV treatment. Positive anti-HBeAg specifies an active stage of acute HBV infection that is in its final stages, the risk for contagiousness is dramatically reduced.
