About Interleukin:
The development of knowledge and understanding regarding Interleukin is proving to be an important area of scientific research.
Mechanism
Interleukin proteins are a group of cytokines that modulate and control the behavior of cells. Interleukin play the part of the defenders in the bodily system; they are particularly strongly linked to immune responses such as inflammation. Good functioning of Interleukin proteins is vital for a strong immune system and disease resistance.
Function
Interleukin proteins are responsible for a variety of different functions involving immune response and pathogen management. The term “Interleukin” is actually a family name for a group of proteins which can then be divided into a number of subtypes.
● Interleukin 1: Stimulates the production of Interferon, a group of proteins responsible for further immune defense, and encourages the growth of disease-fighting cells such as B-cells and T-cells;
● Interleukin 2: Controls and regulates the activity of white blood cells, leukocytes, and lymphocyte activity;
● Interleukin 3: Stimulates cell proliferation in the myeloid group, such as erythrocytes and monocytes;
● Interleukin 4: Creates differentiation of naive T-cells, which help in pathogen responses;
● Interleukin 5: Stimulates the growth of B-cells and controls the production of immunoglobulin;
● Interleukin 6: Controls immune response during trauma and inflammation;
● Interleukin 7: Stimulates the production of blood cells;
● Interleukin 8: Encourages a response of immune cells to the site of an infection;
● Interleukin 9: Inhibits the growth of tumors and performs cell regulation;
● Interleukin 10: Provides a cellular response within the immune system and to sites of infection;
● Interleukin 11: Regulates the production of blood cells;
● Interleukin 12: Encourages the development of TH1 responses;
● Interleukin 13: Provides cellular modification and performs central mediatory actions in the event of allergic inflammation;
● Interleukin 14: Promotes the growth of cells;
● Interleukin 15: Encourages the proliferation of ‘natural killer’ cells;
● Interleukin 16: Similar to 8 and 10, Interleukin 16 encourages a cellular response to the site of an infection;
● Interleukin 17: Stimulates inflammation to assist at the site of infection or trauma;
● Interleukin 18: As with 17, stimulates inflammation.
All of the Interleukin proteins are involved in immune response, either directly or assisting with cell modulation.
Interactions
As the above show, Interleukin proteins interact with a large number of other cells involved in the immune system. This includes, but is not limited to:
● T-cells;
● B-cells;
● Blood cells;
● The entire myeloid group of cells…
Essentially, there is not a single aspect of the immune response in the body that is not in some way controlled or modulated by Interleukin. Furthermore, several Interleukin proteins are used as part of cancer treatment.
Thoughts For The Future
● Continued development of cancer treatments involving Interleukin 2, 3, and 5 is to be expected.
● Further research is needed on mitigating the side effects of Interleukin treatments for cancer as, at present, the side effects can be deeply unpleasant.
