It has also been linked to something known now as a MOG associated disease which is a very rare demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system. The dssp secondary structure of the protein has three short helical segments as well as ten beta strands. It is 6% helical and 43% beta sheet. The beta strands are located within two antiparallel beta sheets. It is now believed that it has an important role in the myelination of nerves in the central nervous system, as well as being an adhesive molecule.
