ING1 encodes a tumour suppressor protein that can induce cell growth arrest, and apoptosis (the death of cells that occurs as a normal and controlled part of growth and development). The encoded protein is a nuclear protein that physically interacts with TP53, the tumour suppressor protein. It is a component of the p53 signalling pathway.
